The Story of Kolkata Metro Since 1984

Kolkata metro is India's one of the oldest operational metro networks since 1984. It is a rapid transit system which is operated by the Metro Railway, Kolkata and Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation(KMRC) . In 1972 Kolkata metro had its first operational line from Esplanade and Netaji Bhawan with a 3.40 km route. The idea has been conceptualised in the 1920's, however at present there are two operational lines of the Kolkata Metro : Dakshineswar- Kavi Subhash and Salt Lake Sector 5-  Phool Bagan. Out of 26 metro stations in Kolkata, 10 were named after famous Bengali personalities and rest were of various locations.

               The Kolkata Metro was controlled by the Indian Railways as being declared as the 17th zone of Indian Railways. The Kolkata Metro added two new routes in its list :  Joka- Taratala and Garia- Ruby to start commuting by the end of this year. Pm Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Joka- Taratala route of Kolkata metro along with CM Mamata Banerjee, Union rail minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and other officials on 30th December 2022. Four other lines of the metro are in different stages of construction too.

             Metro has been an easy transportation system with fast travelling for daily commuters. The charges of this rides are priced according to the distance travel ranging from Rs 5- 25 as per kms. The Metro has not only increased its routes but also updated it system. Now, commuters can also have smart cards instead of tokens. They can recharge those cards at the ticket counter, recharge machine or even from the metro mobile application.

            Kolkata metro station can be said as the most modified Railway systems in India since its operation. It has eased the fast paced life of the daily commuters. So if you are in Kolkata, you must have a metro ride in any of the favourable routes.
