In Memories of Tram
Tram forms an integral part of Kolkata's culture and heritage. A trip to kolkata is incomplete without a tram ride. Not only heritage, tram was actually the most important transportation systems during its initial days. The invention of tram dates back in the colonial era when the horse-driven trams were first introduced in UK. After two decades, the electricity- driven trams are introduced in 1902 setting a new medium of transportation in Kolkata.
Since, then the trams made a huge impact on the local daily commuters. Many eminent personalities of that time used to sit in trams and enjoy the ride peacefully. Even Rabindranath Tagore also mentioned about trams in his poem 'Swapno' which is based on Kolkata.The first electric tram ran in Asia in between Kolkata's esplanade and khidderpore in 1902 making it a proud moment for the city to relish on forever. Later on, many other routes like kalighat, seladah, bagbazar route, howrah station, ahiritola, hatibagan junction were added.
However, the rush of people, busy time schedules and better transport options resulted in departure of trams in Kolkata. The authority had tried to change the routes, fares and infrastructures to maintain the old-charm of the Kolkata through trams. An initiative was also taken for highlighting the exciting history of the vehicle through a tram museum in Kolkata. Smaranika, the tram musuem is a two compartment tram cum cafe located at the esplanade tram depot grounds. One can sit here for a quick snack at a fare of Rs. 10 and enjoy the rusty-vintage vibes of the tram along with the displayed artefacts, gears, tickets, model vehicles, uniforms, etc. The trams are a legacy of Kolkata. It might get reduced in numbers but its popularity and charm will always remain in every corner of Kolkata.
