The soulful peace of the 'Punya' Ganga Snan
India is a country which has its own diverse cultures, traditions and festivals enhancing people's life with joy, peace and prosperity. One such festival of India is the Gangasagar Mela which attracts thousands of devotees around the world. The Gangasagar Mela is a globally accepted spiritual and cultural event also known as the Ganga Sagar Yatra or Ganga snan. During the time of the winter season, this mela is an annual gathering of thousands of devotees at Sagar Island or Sagar deep situated on the Bay of Bengal.
The Gangasagar Mela takes place every year during Makar Sankranti. This year in 2023, it began on 14th January, a day before Makar Sankranti and ended on 15th January. The devotees takes a Ganga snan in the holy river Ganga in the morning worshipping lord surya or sun. Ganga is regarded as a holy river in the Hindu religion. Ganga Sagar has its importance as the devotees believe that taking a dip in the river purifiers their soul and cleans their sin or evil deeds. The Ganga Sagar Mela is regarded as the second largest fair in human history after Kumbh Mela being the first one.
Though, the Gangasagar Mela is a Hindu festival, many foreigners as well as other tourists are equally fascinated with the festivities held here. A devotee can reach to the Mela ground via means of transport like railways, roadways, airways, etc. The State Government arranges for various camps, cottages and hotel rooms for the devotees. Apart from the Mela people also visit places like the Sagar Marine park, Chimagudi mudflat, Ramkrishna mission, etc. Thus it is evident that the bright lamps, the 'punya' snan and the chanted mantras of the Gangasagar Mela gives a soulful peace to the devotees.
